Since the early 1970s, Ettlingen has included the following districts: Ettlingen Town Center, and the surrounding villages of Bruchhausen, Spessart, Ettlingenweier, Oberweier, Schöllbronn and Schluttenbach. In 1914, these 6 villages were separate entities from Ettlingen.
This section shows photos of some of the memorials erected to those killed in action from the various districts of Ettlingen. We start with the memorial in the Town Center, followed by the individual war memorials from the villages.
The memorial to those killed in action in the Great War from Ettlingen Town Center was integrated into the tower of Ettlingen's Town Hall. The tower itself dates from the 13th century and rises above an archway which forms the old gateway to the town. Next to this archway is a smaller passage, both walls of which contain all the engraved names of those who died, listed by individual battle, on polished natural stone slabs.
The memorial was created by Oskar Kiefer of Ettlingen in 1927 and was the first "anti-war memorial" in Germany. Oskar Kiefer was a well-known sculptor who also designed statues and other sculptures which can still be seen today in Baden-Baden and in Karlsruhe. Several members of his family fought in the Great War, including his brothers Theodor ("Tor") Kiefer and Felix ("Lix") Kiefer.
Letters from the battlefields (Feldpost) from Tor and Lix Kiefer will be shown on this site in the section Letters From The Battlefields.
This first photo shows the gruesome sculpture by Oskar Kiefer of the skeleton on horseback, riding above the bodies of the dead and dying. It bears the inscription "1914-1918". Such a memorial was uncommon at the time, as war had previously been considered a noble and necessary activity and had been somewhat glorified.
The second inscription "1939-1945" was added after World War II. Oskar Kiefer himself died in 1938, before the start of World War II.
The names of the dead, listed by battle |
In this photo, we can see the names of the battles more clearly. "Kriegsgebiet im Westen" refers to the battles at the western front, at Mons, Yser and Flanders.
Here, we can see the names of some of the soldiers lost in the Battles of the Somme, where some of the most bloody battles of the Great War were fought.
This photo shows the battles fought on the eastern front, at Tannenberg and in Northern Poland.

Thank you for such a informative site and for sharing it with the Western Front Association.

A fantastic piece of work. Very interesting to see how Germany is trying to remember their War Dead. I will keep returning to the blog.

This is so interesting. I am so pleased to be able to pay my respects to the German Fallen also. When I take school groups to Ypres, we always visit the German cemetery at Langemarck as well.

It's good to see that you are remembering your war dead. They died for their Country as ours did in the UK etc. They were all brave men regardless of which side they were on xx
I'm so glad Ettlingen is trying to honor those that fought in the wars. It is our history and those that ignore our past are doomed to repeat it. My Great Uncle died in WW1 and I have seen the memorial at the Rathaus many times. He was Ferdinand Riede.
Peter, how wonderful to hear from you. If you have a picture and a story of your Great-Uncle I would love to include him on the site.

Thank you for a wonderful website. Job well done.
I have read this list in the plaque on the wall last week in Ettlingen. It'so sad read how many people died for their country. We Europeans fought each others for mny time now it'is time to live togheter in peace.
Thank you for your comments. I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments.
This is a superb piece of work. It is so interesting for me, an Englishman, to be able to read about Germany's experience of the Great War. Those lists of men who served, accompanied by photographs are incredibly moving and the memorials, unique and haunting.
Thank you Stephen!
